How has OCAPICA Impacted the story of your life?

I could honestly go on and on about the impact that OCAPICA has had in my life, so I’ll try to keep it short. I always dreamed of attending college and I prepared myself throughout high school to apply to some of the top universities my senior year. However, I thought I would have to give up on my dreams when my dad passed away after battling cancer for a year at the beginning of my senior year. My dad was my family’s primary financial support and I thought that I would never be able to afford my dream school UCI. I still remember the day that Sheryll, who had helped me fill out my FAFSA, reached out to me to encourage me to apply to the OCAPICA program. Being accepted to the OCAPICA program was so amazing because it not only gave me hope that I could attend my dream school, but also gave me an amazing community of support. OCAPICA is unlike any of the other scholarship organizations that I have been a part of because they focus on building a relationship with their scholars. OCAPICA has not only provided the necessary funds to continue with my education, but they have also ensured that I build the essential life skills to be successful. With the help of OCAPICA I have been able to grow from the insecure college freshman who doubted she would survive her first quarter to a more confident second year student at UCI.

Thanks OCAPICA for being the bestest EVER!

What are special memories you have of your journey with OCAPICA?

One of the most memorable experiences with OCAPICA was the end of the year workshop with my 2015 cohort. It was really nice to see a lot of my friends from the program that I had not seen in a long time. I remember that during that workshop we all went around and shared our experiences of our first year in college. I struggled a lot during my first quarter in college because it was a lot of change for me and I had a lot of self-doubt. Hearing everyone else’s different college experiences helped me realize that I wasn’t alone. It felt so liberating to just vent to each other and talk about the craziness of college. Another one of my favorite memories was attending the end of the year ceremony because I was able to see all of the new and old scholars!
