Pacific Islander Health Careers Pipeline Program Report

OCAPICA is pleased to present our Pacific Islander Health Careers Pipeline Program Report.  This report was produced by a number of community members and leaders and represents the planning phase and needs assessment to our Pacific Islander Health Careers Pipeline Program (PIHCPP).  The report highlights focus groups and interviews with Pacific Islanders about barriers to education and health careers, demographic information about Pacific Islanders, and discusses plans for implementing a health careers pipeline program and its components.

Pacific Islanders experience disproportionately high rates of chronic diseases; yet, there exists an exceptionally low number of bilingual, bicultural providers from the community.  The PIHCPP was created to increase the number of Pacific Islander health care providers and health related professionals, as well as prepare them to address the health disparities experienced by the community.

PIHCPP is funded by The California Endowment with additional support from the REACH US Promoting Access to Health for Women Program with funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Weaving an Islander Network for Pacific Islander Cancer Awareness, Research and Training program with funding from the National Cancer Institute.

OCAPICA and the US Census

OCAPICA is part of the California Asian and Pacific Islander 2010 Census Network, also known as API Count, is a network of Asian and Pacific Islander organizations that have come together to promote Asian and Pacific Islander involvement in Census 2010 through coordinated advocacy, outreach, training, and media work across the state.  Spearheaded by the Asian Pacific American Legal Center , API Count comprises of organizations spanning seven target regions across the state that will be working with community based organizations to provide direct outreach and education to their respective ethnic communities. OCAPICA has partnered up with 20 local Community Based Organizations to help conduct outreach not only in Orange County, but parts of San Bernardino, San Gabriel Valley, and Riverside as well.

OCAPICA is also serving as a Questionnaire Assistance Center to assist individuals in filling out their Census forms. We are also a Be Counted site where organizations and individuals may come and get Census informational materials such as brochures, flyers, posters, etc if they wish. For up to date information on our API Count Network and upcoming events, you can visit www.apicount.org

OCAPICA is part of Coalition of Asian Pacific Americans for Fair Redistricting (CAPAFR), a statewide coalition working to strengthen the voice of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in California during the 2011 redistricting process. CAPAFR is lead by nine organizations throughout the state. Our goal is to encourage APIs to apply for the Redistricting Commission of 2011. Public hearings will be held and opened to the community to take part in voicing how the lines will be re-drawn. For more information, please visit http://www.facebook.com/capafr2011

OCAPICA's Job Skills and Employment Assistance Services

Due to the current state of the global economy, many members of our community have lost their jobs or have had a reduction in hours. OCAPICA's newly created Job Skills and Employment Assistance Services focuses on creating new job opportunities by making available new job postings, as well as offering services to enhance job-seeking techniques (i.e. resume building, interviewing skills, etc.).

Enrolling in OCAPICA's Job Skills and Employment Assistance Services will increase the chances of finding employment, however, it does not guarantee placement.

To make an appointment please contact

Scott Iseri at siseri@ocapica.org (714)636-9095 x 211.

In addition, if you are an employer looking to recruit please contact OCAPICA.

New Education Curriculum

A newly adapted curriculum has been developed to supplement the movie Journey from the Fall by Ham Tran.  The curriculum focuses on the experience of Vietnamese Americans, as immigrants to the United States following the Fall of Saigon in 1975.  The curriculum covers the history of the Vietnamese who fled their native country in fear of persecution by the new Communist government and supplements the film Journey from the Fall which depicts a family ' s journey in this historical context.  The curriculum covers the California Standards for the Teaching Profession (CSTP) and covers World History, the American Experience, World Literature, American Literature and Multicultural Education subjects.  The curriculum is a collaborative effort between CSULB CLMER, MTSA/Induction, OCAPICA and VAALA.
