The
Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community
Alliance (OCAPICA) is dedicated to enhancing the health,
and social and economic well-being of Asians and Pacific
Islanders in Orange County, California. Established
in 1997, OCAPICA works to improve and expand the community's
opportunities through service, education, advocacy,
organizing and research. These community-driven activities
seek to empower Asians and Pacific Islanders to define
and control their lives and the future of their community.
PATH
for Women Scholarship Fund for Pacific Islander Students
REACH US – Promoting Access to Health for Pacific
Islander and Southeast Asian Women (PATH for Women),
a breast and cervical cancer program working to address
disparities among Asian and Pacific Islander communities,
is offering the PATH for Women Scholarship Fund to
Pacific Islander high school seniors and undergraduate
college students who demonstrate significant merit
in academics, workplace, and community with an interest
in the health field. Five students will be selected
to receive a $1,000 scholarship to offset their expenses
at a two- or four-year accredited institution.
Eligibility
High school seniors and students who are currently
or will be attending a two or four year institution
that offers accredited, post-secondary instruction
may apply. Applicants must be of Pacific Islander
descent and must reside in Orange County, Los Angeles
County or San Diego County or attend a college or
university in one of these counties. Low income
students and those who are of the first generation
in their family to attend college are encouraged to
apply.

Soar
Afterschool Program Resumes for Fall 2008
Established
in January 2004, OCAPICA launched their FREE afterschool
program. This program provides high school-aged youth
with a safe environment to receive mentorship and
academic advising. Through a variety of activities,
the program aims to provide opportunities for academic
and character maturity for low income students in
the community. Our afterschool program is made possible
through funding from Orange County United Way.

The report
provides a snapshot of Asian American political participation
in Orange County during the 2006 General Election
and answers a number of important questions. How many
Asian Americans voted, both countywide and by city?

Were Asian Americans more likely to vote at the polls
or by mail?

New
Education Curriculum
A
newly adapted curriculum has been developed to supplement
the movie Journey
from the Fall
by Ham Tran. The curriculum focuses on the
experience of Vietnamese Americans, as immigrants
to the United States following the Fall of Saigon
in 1975. The curriculum covers the history of
the Vietnamese who fled their native country in fear
of persecution by the new Communist government and
supplements the film Journey
from the Fall which depicts a family '
s journey in this historical context. The curriculum
covers the California Standards for the Teaching Profession
(CSTP) and covers World History, the American Experience,
World Literature, American Literature and Multicultural
Education subjects. The curriculum is a collaborative
effort between CSULB CLMER, MTSA/Induction, OCAPICA
and VAALA.

for a great volunteer opportunity to put on your resume?
Need
Internship Credit for your major?
The
Orange County Asian and Pacific Islander Community
Alliance (OCAPICA) need interns/volunteers to serve
as positive role models and provide academic assistance
to high school aged students in our SOAR Afterschool
Program. This program provides youth with a safe environment
to receive academic mentoring and support, as well
as character education, leadership development, and
cultural enrichment.
There
are several volunteer opportunities available:
Academic
Mentor
– Help students reach their academic goals. Assist
with homework in one-on-one and small group settings
(min. commitment of 3 hours/week).
Internships
– Interested in working with youth, Asian and Pacific
Islander issues, or the non-profit field? Earn college
credits while you gain valuable skills and experience.
One
Time Volunteer
– Attend field trips, assist with special events,
present workshops – there are a variety of ways you
can volunteer on a one-time basis.
